OUR TWILIGHT SUMMER ADVENTURE IN ROVINJ
A 3-NIGHT FAMILY ESCAPE TO ROVINJ, CROATIA
Ah, Rovinj—a picturesque gem on Croatia’s Istrian peninsula, where old-world charm and the Adriatic coastline come together in the most spectacular way imaginable. When we were planning a short “Indian summer” getaway with our three kids, Rovinj topped our destination shortlist. Why? Because it was an opportunity to visit a historic seaside town that had a Venetian feel and charm about it, from its buildings through to its cobblestone streets and alleyways all during the last throughs of the summer sun. Plus, it was on the doorstep of our temporary base in Slovenia!
SUNSET WITH A SEA BREEZE
GETTING THERE - THE DRIVE FROM LJUBLJANA TO ROVINJ
The road trip kickstarted our adventure, and honestly, it was smooth sailing. Even with the kids packed into the backseat, there was no unwanted commentary from the little ones (for once… hurray) - for instance, “have we crossed the border yet?”…. “you said we are only a few minutes from the border!” or “how much longer”. On the top of that, there was no elbowing/poking/pinching too (the kids, not the parents!). So far so good.
Starting in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s charming capital, it took us less than 2.5 hours to cross the picturesque Slovenian and Croatian countrysides. Rolling sunburnt-hills and glimpses of the Adriatic Seas kept us all engaged… well, the adults in the car at least!
Having crossed the border and heading south on the freeway, about halfway along the Istrian peninsular we turned off and headed west towards the coast. Along the way, the road began winding down towards the Adriatic coastline. Once we passed the houses and buildings on Rovinj’s outskirts, we caught a tiny glimpse of the historic old town which seems to rise out of the sea with its cluster of pastel buildings and the imposing church bell tower.
PARKED THE CAR, ENTERED THE COBBLESTONE ZONE
Rovinj is a town of cobblestone streets. Like, serious cobblestone. Our accomodation host had a private car parking arrangement in an enclosed open yard area on the fringe of the Old Town, where we left our car for the duration of our stay. As with most old town centres, access by cars (except for municipal vehicles) is generally a no-go.
Once parked, our host had organised, for all five of us (and our luggage) to be driven in a repurposed golf cart from the car park to our accomodation into the Old Town. I will give the young driver credit, he navigated both the borderline slippery cobblestone surface and the occasional sauntering oblivious tourists with ease and precision along the narrow streets and and even narrower alleyways. In fact I would go as far as saying that he could have even challenged himself by driving blindfolded! He was that good! The performance driving wasn’t lost on the kids either. In fact, in their minds it was the “best. ride. ever!” So much for their parents driving ability then… thanks, kids!
ALISIJA YELLING “I’M THE KING OF THE STATUE”
Mid afternoon and we’ve unloaded our kids, luggage (how much luggage does one really need on a three day trip!?) and settled in. The sun was shining in all its glory over this beautiful historic port town.
THE CHARM OF ROVINJ’S COBBLED STREETS
Put simply, Rovinj is gorgeous. During our trip we spent hours wandering its charming labyrinth of streets and alleys, where every turn reveals something unique—a hidden square, centuries-old buildings painted in earthy pastel tones, or cute little artisan bakeries wafting the smell of fresh baked goods.
The kids were busy pointing out everything! From colorful doors to stray cats lounging on steps, they discovered surprises wherever they looked - even the occasional dog or cat poop (Yeuch!). And, I’ll be honest—I live for that “lost but loving it” feeling. Rovinj is the kind of place where getting a little lost only adds to the experience.
FUN FACT:
We found Rovinj’s cobblestones to be crazy smooth so wearing comfy shoes is not just a suggestion - it’s non-negotiable. Take it from me, I stepped out in heels for dinner on the first night and after slipping for the third time in two minutes, I had to go back and put on some sensinble flats.
A HIDDEN TREASURE BENEATH THE BEACH RESTAURANT
On our second day, we stumbled across a hidden gem—a pebble beach tucked beneath a restaurant along the coast. After we savored a lazy seaside lunch, our kids discovered the ultimate treasure hunt at the pebble beach.
The kids had an entire collection of perfectly smooth sea glass in every shade imaginable. Clear, blues, and even a few rare reds. The kids spent hours combing through the pebbles and didn’t complain once (two from two - first the car ride, now this!).
I’m convinced sea glass speaks to children by saying, “hey kids, look over here, come find me!”
THE FOOD SCENE—TUNAHOLIC BURGER TO ITALIAN DREAMS
Speaking of lunch, Rovinj’s food deserves a special round of applause. First off, Tunaholic Burger. If you love your seafood like us, this place is a dream come true. Words don’t do it justice, but imagine a juicy, flavorful tuna burger packed with fresh ingredients and a zingy sauce—we were hooked (no pun intended).
You cannot help but notice Rovinj’s Italian influence throughout the town, particularly with the local cuisine. Whether it’s a sumptuous flaky pastry at breakfast or an array of both seafood and pasta dishes for lunch and dinner. There’s an evident coming together of Venetian and local cooking influences where ever you turn.
RUSTIC COMFORT MEETS STYLE—OUR ACCOMMODATION
We stayed at the cutest rustic guesthouse that perfectly matched Rovinj’s old-world charm. Think cozy seaside influenced furnishings and modern amenities along with exposed wooden beams along with wooden window shutters. It wasn’t fancy and didn’t need to be, but it had that perfect blend of comfort and a character that reflected the location within the Old Town.
EVENING ELEGANCE AT VALENTINO BAR
We decided to splurge a little for one of the nights. We hit-up a Valentio Bar for a cocktail experience at a stunning outdoor spot nestled into the rocks by the water’s edge. With its elegant setup, comprising a combination of well-appointed seating and strategically positioned plush cushions on the rock-face for the more younger and nimble patrons, through to subtle downlighting illuminating the sea below, the atmosphere and setting was nothing short of pure swank.
While sipping our relatively overpriced cocktails and watching fish dart under the illuminated waters, I couldn’t help but think, there couldn’t be to many places in the world that gives you equal parts natural coastal beauty and beautiful old buildings along with both charm and elegance thrown into the mix.
WHY ROVINJ IS PERFECT FOR FAMILIES
If you’re someone who dreams of family adventures that mix fun, relaxation all within a unique centuries old historical seaside town, Rovinj ticks all the boxes. Between the cobblestone streets, the picture-perfect sunsets, some of the most varied and beautiful beaches on the Croatian coast and the crazy network of small pedestrian friendly streets, this town is a dream destination for families.
It’s not just a place to visit—it’s a place that makes you stop and think about the memories that you want to create and to enjoy life's little moments. Not just while you are there, but moving forward as well.
Would we come back? Absolutely—bags packed and ready for another round when the opportunity presents itself!
If Croatia’s calling your name, don’t overlook this little slice of paradise. You’ll love every moment, briskly driven repurposed golf carts and all!
Much love,
Natalija xoxo
