BELGRADE, SERBIA - A FAMILY TRAVEL DIARY
Ever found yourself coming back to the same destination over and over again because it feels like home, but with a twist of adventure? That’s how Belgrade, Serbia, is for me. After some 12 visits, this city still tugs at my heartstrings every single time I return.
It’s more than just a travel destination — it’s a place that combines a mix of my own family history, a city that is bustling with vibrant culture, and an abundance of amazing food. Even my kids totally get it now. They’ve coined Belgrade as our "second home," and honestly, they’re not wrong!
Curious about what keeps us coming back every couple of years? From unforgettable family reunions to riverside hangouts, every trip is a mix of nostalgia and new experiences. Whether you’re intrigued by the food scene, historic sites, or a mix of both, I’ll take you through some of my personal highlights and why Belgrade is surprisingly perfect for family-friendly adventures.
“BELGRADE ALWAYS MAKES ME FEEL CLOSER TO YOU MAMA. I KEEP COMING BACK & SOMEHOW NO AMOUNT OF TIME HAS HEALED MY BROKEN HEART.. NOT EVEN A LITTLE.”
HOW BELGRADE BECAME MY TRAVEL CONSTANT
Belgrade is woven into my fabric. My mom and grandparents were born and raised in this lively city. Even though I myself was born in Gothenburg, Sweden and grew up in Adelaide, Australia, my Serbian roots are undeniable—I took my very first baby steps at my Auntie’s home in Belgrade!
Fast forward to my teenage years, when I was 16, I returned for the first time with my beautiful late mom. The time spent with her over this 6 week vacation, was one I will cherish my entire life. She showed me all the places she talked about over the years and immersed me into a culture in a way that only someone who was prolifically proud of her city could.
I fell in love with the bustling streets, the warmth of family gatherings, and the energy and life of Belgrade. Since then, I’ve been coming back regularly — sometimes just for a week during a Eurotrip, other times for month-long stays, or a memorable six-month stint a few years back with my young family.
Last year, though, was extra special. We kicked off our family’s gap year in Serbia, and there’s no better way to start a year of travels than surrounded by family, laughter, and an endless flow of wine (of course).
THE BELGRADE HIGHLIGHTS THAT STEAL THE SHOW... EVERY TIME
1. Family Food Feasts & Lingering Laughter
The Serbian tradition of family meals is unlike anything else. Imagine endless plates of ćevapi, sarma, freshly baked bread, and homemade ajvar. There’s always plenty of laughter and debates about whose version of a dish is more “authentic” — classic kitchen politics!
My kids love practicing and refining their Serbian while trying to impress their cousins, and it’s beyond heartwarming. These gatherings reconnect them to their roots in the best way possible.

2. A Memorable Birthday Bash at FLOW Hotel
Last summer, we checked into FLOW Hotel, nestled near Ada Ciganlija. Why FLOW? Well, my daughter Kasija needed to sharpen her golf skills, and this spot is conveniently close to the urban golf course while offering a homely, funky vibe.
A FLOATING HOTEL, WHERE THE STAFF MAKE YOU FEEL A PART OF THE FAMILY!
The highlight? Celebrating my birthday with a mix of local family and friends visiting from Australia. FLOW’s outdoor balcony felt like a private haven as the kids entertained themselves and we all caught up with plenty of great food and vino. When the night was over I somehow dozed off in the spa tub haha and my kids thought it would be hilarious to surround me with my presents.
3. Exploring Belgrade’s Must-See Spots... Even in the Sweltering Heat
Hot summers? Bring it on! We tackled all the city’s landmarks again, from Kalemegdan Fortress with its spectacular views at the Sava-Danube confluence to the lively pedestrian street, Knez Mihailova. And no visit to Belgrade would be complete without standing in awe of the grandeur of the Church of Saint Sava.
But my favorite photo-op always ends up being at Prince Mihailo Monument in Republic Square. It’s chaotic throughout the day, with locals bustling about and tourists wrestling for the best selfie spot. It’s iconic—a bit like Adelaide’s “Malls Balls” back home (though much older and classier).
A TYPICAL MEETING SPOT FOR THE LOCALS
4. Auntie Dragica’s Personal Belgrade Tour
Make it stand out
Sometimes, all it takes to see a city in a brand-new light is to see it through a local’s perspective. On a solo trip to Belgrade last November, my Aunt Dragica treated me to the tightest-knit and most heartfelt experience of this city. Her city!
Her stories about old Belgrade—the unsung neighbourhoods, where exactly my grandparents used to hang out in their younger days brought a much better understanding to the surrounding streets. Every Serbian family seems to have their memories woven into this city like a patchwork quilt.
5. Floating Weekenders - Splav Vikendica
Here’s a side of Belgrade you might not expect—it’s home to a fantastic floating nightlife AND an endless supply of quirky “floating party houses.”
Naturally, I went big and rented a Splav Vikendica (floating weekender) for a couple of nights for our family.
We ditched fancy outfits for comfy PJs, rotated between the pool and lounging areas, and just lived. Family popped by to join in, watch the sunset together, making it feel less like a party spot and more like our own private retreat on the water. This whole weekend is solid proof of why Belgrade is so much more than its “party city” reputation.
Here's a link to where I booked the accommodation. The website has a host of other options. Feel free to send them a WhatsApp or Viber message to discuss availability and options: Angel’s Nest Villa.
WHY BELGRADE IS PERFECT FOR FAMILIES
Beyond its rich history and modern urban vibe, the best thing about Belgrade is how incredibly welcoming it is for families. Here’s why I keep bringing my kiddos back time and again:
Language Practice – My kids get real-life practice speaking Serbian with family, building confidence (until someone corrects their grammar mid-sentence).
Nikola Tesla Museum – This was my son Maksim's favourite experience. He is such an inquisitive boy and his knowledge of Nikola Tesla is incredible. The visit to the museum has only made him feel even closer to this visionary inventor.
Something for Everyone – Whether you’re a foodie, history nerd, or outdoor adventurer, Belgrade has it all—without overwhelming you like larger European metropolises can.

WRAPPING IT ALL UP
After 12 visits, Belgrade doesn’t just feel like a destination; it feels like chapters of my life, filled with family connection, laughter, and plenty of discoveries.
If you’re considering a trip with the family, I can’t recommend Belgrade enough. Adventure, history, and heartwarming moments await!
